South Eastern Sahara - Saudi Arabia
NEAREST CITY = South Eastern Sahara
The Arabian Peninsula is a plateau composed
of crystalline rock overlain with sediments. Arabia is
bordered on all sides by a series of escarpments. Summer
temperatures average more than 100deg F(38deg C). More than
one-fifth of the Arabian Peninsula is covered by the Rub
al-Khali, which translates to "Empty Quarter". The Rub
al-Khali is the largest continuous sand body on the planet.
Sand ridges hundreds of miles long, and sand mountains are
common features of its landscape. Many of these dunes are well over 500 feet
in height. Although symbolic of deserts, dunes are actually exceptional
and cover less than 10 per cent of the Sahara desert.
